Beautification
While the main purpose of transportation projects is to ease congestion and improve safety, landscaping also plays a critical role in our roadways. The more obvious benefits have to do with aesthetics, but what may be less apparent is that landscaping increases safety through erosion control, boosts economic development and improves air quality with removal of pollutants —linking people, resources and communities.
State Route 99/Turner Road Interchange - Lodi
The improvements to the State Route 99/Turner Road Interchange in Lodi
enhanced safety and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, redirected traffic away from a
school and residential neighborhood, and improved traffic flow on and off State Route 99. But landscaping
and hardscaping were used to this gateway to Lodi. As an ode to the region’s wine grape production, a
nearby overcrossing includes cutouts of grape vines and bunches of grapes. Red paver stones, river rocks
and landscaping were integrated into the design to highlight the roundabout. The project was completed
and open to traffic in Fiscal Year 2023-24.
