This map identifies zip code areas with the four highest COVID-19 death rates (3.7 to 4.3 deaths per 10,000 people) and zip code areas with the four lowest COVID-19 death rates (0 deaths) as of July 20, 2020. The following compares some demographic characteristics (income, racial/ethnic composition) of the two sets of zip code areas.

Median Household Income
Zip code areas with the highest rates of COVID-19 deaths have a higher percentage of low-income residents than areas with the lowest rates. The table below show that zip code areas with the highest rates have together less than 50 percent the median annual household income of zip code areas with the lowest rates ($41,869 versus $97,847 in 2017 dollars).

Race/Ethnicity
In addition to having a higher percentage of lower income residents, zip code areas with the highest rates of COVID-19 deaths have together higher percentages of Hispanic, Black/African-American and Asian residents than zip code areas with the lowest rates. Conversely, zip code areas with the lowest rates have a higher percentage of White residents and lower percentages of Hispanic, Black/African-American and Asian residents.
